The Big Picture

I’m a big believer in details….in making the small things right so that the whole works properly.  However, I also know that I can go crazy being overly-concerned about a small element and, thereby, miss the understanding or the enjoyment of the totality of life.

I always need to be reminded that whatever the situation or the issue of the moment, there is a bigger situation or a more important issue that needs to be considered and ultimately dealt with.

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean. If a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean itself does not become dirty.
Mohandas Gandhi

Do not lose faith in humanity. There are over six billion people in the world who have never played you a single, dirty trick.

Spontaneity is the quality of being able to do something just because you feel like it at the moment….of trusting your instincts….of taking yourself by surprise and snatching from the clutches of your well-organized routine a bit of unscheduled pleasure.
Richard Iannelli

If you obey all the rules….you miss all the fun.
Katharine Hepburn

One can survive anything these days except death.
    Oscar Wilde

It's really a lot less complicated than we usually think. Life is playfulness. Children know this. That's why they spend so much of their time playing. They are aware of wonder. Adults often need help remembering how to play. We need to play so that we can rediscover the magic all around us.
Flora Colao

Perpetual devotion to what a person calls their business is only to be sustained by perpetual neglect of many other things.
Robert Louis Stevenson

Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain.  An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point.
                                                                            Harold Melchart

Take time out to ride your bike, build sand castles, fly a kite, smell a rose, walk in the woods or stroll barefoot in the sand. We need to continually experience the world of the creative child within.
Denis Waitley

Some wisdoms for a graduating class:

It is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice.
Not everyone will like you.  Get over it.
No good work is ever wasted.
When you are ready to get married, you will know it.
In the short run, bullies and rude people get their way.
In the long run, they get exactly what they deserve.
If your date is rude to the restaurant server….you have been warned.
Play sports as long as possible.  Stop competing in sports as soon as possible.
Travel can be exhausting and exasperating, but later you will remember
where you went and you’ll be glad you made the effort.
Vote.  It is not that hard….and it makes you think bigger thoughts.
Later in life your regrets will be over the times when you could have taken a chance and did not.
        Take some chances.
News is fine, but the day that you no longer sing along with the radio at least once a week is the
beginning of a whole new stage in your life. It is not a good stage.
Find something you enjoy….fishing, cooking, golf, or woodworking….that has nothing to do
with your job or income.  Continue to do it.
Almost all generalizations turn out to be untrue.  This is particularly true of this one.
                    C. W. Nevius

Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of nonessentials.
Lin Yutang

The young person knows the rules,
but the old person knows the exceptions.
Oliver Wendell Holmes

Our life is frittered away by detail….simplify, simplify!
    Henry David Thoreau

Twelve Things to Remember:

The value of time  .... The success of perseverance .... The pleasure of working
The power of kindness  .... The dignity of simplicity .... The worth of character
The influence of example .... The obligation of duty .... The wisdom of economy
The improvement of talent .... The joy of originating .... The virtue of patience

You begin to lose perspective when you talk to too many advertising account executives. For one horrendous moment, you begin to look at the world through their eyes.
Stan Freberg

There is an Indian belief that everyone is a house of four rooms: a physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual room. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time, but unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not complete.
Rumer Godden

Life is beautiful for those who have love to see them through.

Some people make a great fuss over a comet in the sky or a total eclipse,
     but never notice a sunset.

Some people miss the message because they are too busy checking the spelling.

Scared and sacred are spelled with the same letters.  Awful proceeds from the same root word as awesome.  The same with terrify and terrific.  Every negative experience holds the seed of transformation.
                                                                         Alan Cohen

That “some good can be derived from every event” is a better proposition
than “everything happens for the best”….which it assuredly does not.
    James Feibleman

By the way, did you ever realize that if Moses would have turned right instead of left upon leaving Egypt, Israel would have had the oil and the Arabs would have had the sand?
Golda Meir

Right is more precious than peace.
    Woodrow Wilson

Human sovereignty transcends national sovereignty.
    Lester B. Pearson

When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won.  There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time, they can seem invincible.  But in the end, they always fall.  Think of it, always.
Mohandas Gandhi

Modern cynics and skeptics see no harm in paying those to whom they entrust the minds of their children a smaller wage than is paid to those to whom they entrust the care of their plumbing.
John F. Kennedy

Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness.
James Thurber

Behind the door of every contented, happy person there ought to be someone standing and holding a little hammer and regularly knocking on the door to continually remind the contented person that there are uncontented people out there.
Anton Chekhov

Time cools, time clarifies.
No mood can be maintained quite unaltered through the course of hours.
    Thomas Mann

                  Done Too Soon

Lyrics and music and sung by Neil Diamond

Jesus Christ, Fannie Brice, Wolfie Mozart and Humphrey Bogart,
Genghis Khan and on to H.G. Wells.
E.A. Poe, Henri Rousseau, Shalom Aleichem
and Caryl Chessman, Alan Freed and Buster Keaton, too.
And each one of them sweated beneath the same sun.
And wept when it was all done.
 For being done too soon.

In three words, I can sum up everything I've learned about life: It goes on.
    Robert Frost

There are only two ways to look at life:
that nothing is a miracle
and
that everything is a miracle.
 Dean Edell

Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.
                            Charlie Chaplin

Life is like a sewer.  What you get out of it depends on what you put into it.
Tom Lehrer

Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not.
In either case, the idea is quite staggering.
    Arthur C. Clarke

Our earth is degenerate. Bribery and corruption are common.
Children no longer obey their parents. The end of the world is rapidly approaching.
Carved on a Stone Slab
in Assyria in 2800 B.C

In times like these,
it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.
Paul Harvey

To be in one's own heart in kindly sympathy with all things; this is the nature of righteousness.

We have always assumed that we are more intelligent than dolphins
because we have achieved so much….
the wheel, big cities, the internet, wars, etc.,
while all the dolphins have ever done is swim around in the water having a good time.
But conversely, the dolphins have always believed that they are more intelligent than we are….
                               for precisely the same reason.
Douglas Noel Adams

The richest lives attain an inner balance comprised of work, play and love in equal amounts.  To pursue one at the expense of the others is to open oneself to sadness in older age.  Pursuing all three with like dedication ensures a later life graced with serenity and fulfillment.
Erik Erikson

                   Wisdom in four words:

                     Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
                         Nothing succeeds like success.
                                Still waters run deep.
                                This, too, shall pass.
                                    Live and let live.
