What can I say that hasn’t already been said….over and over and over. I guess some people will just never get it….unless maybe they are on the receiving end one day. That’s not much consolation for those who are on the receiving end all their lives. Why can’t we just live and let live?!
When asked her opinion of homosexuals, Queen Victoria said,
“I don't care what people do, as long as they don't do it in the street and scare the horses.”
You can only protect your liberties in this world by protecting the other person's freedom. You can only be free if I am free.
The highest result of education is tolerance.
Prejudice is the child of ignorance.
The difference between a prejudice and a conviction
is that you can explain a conviction without getting mad.
I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense,
once the hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.
You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein ll. Music by Richard Rodgers.
Sung by Bill Tabbert.
(From the musical and film “South Pacific”)
You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear.
You’ve got to be taught from year to year.
You’ve got to be taught to be afraid
of people whose skin is a different shade.
You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late,
to hate all the people your relatives hate.
You’ve got to be carefully taught.
People are wise in proportion not to their experience,
but to their capacity for experience.
Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?
There is no social evil, no form of injustice, whether of the feudal or capitalist order, which has not been sanctified in some way or another by religious sentiment and thereby rendered more impervious to change.
Never make the mistake of arguing with people
for whose opinions you have no respect.
There are some people that if they don't know, you can't tell 'em.
Everybody has the right to express what he or she thinks.
That, of course, lets the crackpots in.
But if you can’t tell a crackpot when you see one
….then you deserve to be taken in.
Nothing on earth consumes a person
more completely than the passion of resentment.
To the mean all become mean.
We cannot control the evil tongues of others, but living a good life enables us to disregard them.
Cato the Elder
Hatred paralyzes life….Love releases it.
Hatred confuses life….Love harmonizes it.
Hatred darkens life….Love illumines it.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Fears are educated into us, and can, if we wish, be educated out.
The greater the ignorance
….the greater the dogmatism.
Many Americans in a recent poll about their attitudes toward minorities showed a marked disapproval of Wallonians, Danerians and Pirenians. The fact that these minorities were invented by the pollster and did not really exist, did not diminish the hostility of those being polled.
We sent missionaries to China so the Chinese could get into heaven
….but we wouldn't let those same Chinese into our country.
Pearl S. Buck
Two things reduce prejudice: education and laughter.
If large numbers of people believe in freedom of speech….there will be freedom of speech even if the law forbids it. But if public opinion is sluggish….some minorities will be persecuted, even if laws exist to protect them.
People think in herds. And they go mad in herds.
And unfortunately, they only recover their senses slowly….and one by one.
A prejudice is a vagrant opinion without visible means of support.
You can not reason somebody out of something they were not reasoned into.
Stereotypes are devices for saving a biased person the trouble of learning.
Quite often it’s more important
….to change how you see than to change how you look.
