Prejudice

What can I say that hasn’t already been said….over and over and over.  I guess some people will just never get it….unless maybe they are on the receiving end one day.  That’s not much consolation for those who are on the receiving end all their lives.  Why can’t we just live and let live?!

When asked her opinion of homosexuals, Queen Victoria said,
“I don't care what people do, as long as they don't do it in the street and scare the horses.”

You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught

Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein ll.  Music by Richard Rodgers.
            Sung by Bill Tabbert.
(From the musical and film “South Pacific”)

You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear.
You’ve got to be taught from year to year.

You’ve got to be taught to be afraid
of people whose skin is a different shade.

You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late,
to hate all the people your relatives hate.
You’ve got to be carefully taught.

People are wise in proportion not to their experience,

That, of course, lets the crackpots in.
But if you can’t tell a crackpot when you see one
….then you deserve to be taken in.

more completely than the passion of resentment.
Friedrich Nietzsche

Many Americans in a recent poll about their attitudes toward minorities showed a marked disapproval of Wallonians, Danerians and Pirenians. The fact that these minorities were invented by the pollster and did not really exist, did not diminish the hostility of those being polled.
Leo Rosten

We sent missionaries to China so the Chinese could get into heaven
….but we wouldn't let those same Chinese into our country.
Pearl S. Buck

Two things reduce prejudice:  education and laughter.

If large numbers of people believe in freedom of speech….there will be freedom of speech even if the law forbids it.  But if public opinion is sluggish….some minorities will be persecuted, even if laws exist to protect them.
