Kindness

I have always felt that doing kindnesses for family, friends and strangers alike is an important obligation we all have.  I enjoy helping other people….to make life a little easier and more fun for them.  And I also enjoy the warm feeling I get when I do it.  Whether it’s something simple like holding the door for someone at the store or something more involved like taking in a friend for a couple of months whose going through an especially hard time.

I had a big kindness done to me years ago.  Shortly after Anne and I married in 1963, I had to have some pretty scary surgery.  At the time, I was the Program Director/Promotion Manager for KITY/KONO radio in San Antonio responsible for bringing musical shows (Everly Bros., Beach Boys, Dave Brubeck, etc.) to town and seeing that these station-sponsored concerts came off properly.

Well, on the day jazz/pop trumpet star Al Hirt came to San Antonio, I was in the hospital in a lot of pain and fear. (New husband with possible serious cancer or at least possibly losing my ability to father children.)  Three hours before showtime, into my hospital room walks Al Hirt.  He spent the next half hour encouraging me and Anne to hang in there, get well and not to worry about that day’s concert or my future.  Really nice guy.  He didn’t have to take the time.  Really touched me.

The first wisdom below was my father’s favorite maxim and is one of my four favorites.  My dad died of a heart attack when he was only forty-one.  I had two heart attacks in my mid-thirties, so you can see why we should “do it now.” Chances are you might not get another chance.

I shall pass through this world but once.
Any good therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
Etienne de Grellet

What is the real good? I asked in a musing mood.
Order, said the law court. Knowledge, said the school.
Truth, said the wise one. Pleasure, said the fool.
Love, said the maiden. Beauty, said the page.
Freedom, said the dreamer. Home, said the sage.
Fame, said the soldier. Equity, said the seer.
Spake my heart full sadly; the answer is not here.
Then within my bosom softly this I heard:
“Each heart holds the secret; Kindness is the word.”
Peter O'Reilly

I shall not live in vain.

I shall not live in vain.

                                                                   On this day:

Mend a quarrel.  Search out a forgotten friend.
Dismiss suspicion.  Praise somebody.
Share some treasure.  Encourage a youth.
Express your loyalty.  Keep a promise.
Speak your love.  Find the time.
Forget a grudge.  Laugh a little more.
Think first of someone else.
Decry complacency.  Forgive an enemy.
Gladden the heart of a child.
Listen to another opinion.  Apologize to someone.
Express your gratitude.  Try to understand.
Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the Earth.
