The Wisdoms Project

I believe that nothing happens until someone does something.  Someone has to say the first word, make a decision, start the ball rolling, etc.  And I discovered early that much more often than not, being first lets me set the tone, puts me in a leadership position, gets the action started….and usually involves minimal negative risk to me or the final outcome..

Be the first to give a friendly sign….to nod first….
smile first …. speak first….forgive first.

The time is always right
….to do what is right.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

How wonderful that no one need wait a single moment
to improve the world.
Anne Frank

There is a tide in the affairs of people, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their lives is bound in shallows and miseries. On such a full sea we are now afloat….and we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.
William Shakespeare

It takes a lot of courage to let go of the familiar and seemingly secure in order to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting….for in movement there is life….and in change there is power.
Alan Cohen

Don't just wait for your ship to come in….swim out to it.

The people who get on in this world are the people who look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, they make them.
George Bernard Shaw

The things that come to those that wait
may be the things left over by those who got there first.

People grind and grind in the mill of a truism and nothing comes out but what was put in. But the moment they desert the tradition for a spontaneous thought….then poetry, wit, hope, virtue, learning, anecdote all flock to their aid.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Do not always follow where the path leads.
Rather, sometimes go where there is no path and leave a trail.

Every revolution was first a thought in one person’s mind.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Activism is my rent for living on the planet.
Alice Walker

The beginning is the most important part of the work.

All glory comes from daring to begin.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
    Lao Tse

It is the job that is never started that takes the longest to finish.
J.R.R. Tolkien

The first step is to take the first step….raise one foot off dead center. You're not compelled to achieve your aspiration by one soaring flight, not even by giant steps….only one foot at a time.  After the first step, the second is easier, the third is surer, the fourth is faster. And then suddenly, the miracle happens. Your mind is off the footsteps and only on the dream. Only you're not dreaming the dream anymore….you're living it.
Katherine Nash

There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Start by doing what's necessary….then what's possible….and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
St. Francis of Assisi

A year from now you’ll wish you had started today.

Twenty years from now, you’ll be more disappointed by
the things that you didn’t do than by the things you did do.
Mark Twain

The person who says, “It can’t be done,” is often interrupted
….by self-starters who announce that they have just done it.

We must be bold.
We must persist in experimentation.
Take a method and try it.
If it fails….admit it frankly and try another.
But above all, try something.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt

I have been impressed with the urgency of doing.
Knowing is not enough….we must apply.
Being willing is not enough….we must do.
Leonardo da Vinci

The one thing worse than a quitter is the one who is afraid to begin.

For of all sad words of tongue and pen,
the saddest are these:
“It might have been.”
John Greenleaf Whittier

Don’t worry about the horse being blind, just load the wagon.
John Madden

Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections
must be first overcome.
Samuel Johnson

Those who ask , usually get.
Those who ask nicely, usually get more.

Many things are lost for want of asking.
English Proverb

It is usually better to proceed and possibly have to ask for forgiveness
than to wait and have to ask for permission.

There are two kinds of people who never amount to much
….those who cannot do what they’re told and those who can do nothing else.
Cyrus Curtis

If you see a snake, just kill it.
Don’t appoint a committee on snakes.
H. Ross Perot

The road is strewn with many dangers.  First is the danger of futility….the belief there is nothing that one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world’s ills.

Yet….each time that a person stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strikes out against injustice, that person sends forth a tiny ripple of hope….and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring….those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
Robert F. Kennedy
