It’s what life is all about. Being happy yourself and helping others to be happy.
I believe that you have to be happy yourself first….that you have a right to expect happiness….that you have to accept some unhappiness to really enjoy the happy times….that you have an obligation to try to bring happiness to others ….and that you are responsible for your own happiness.
Make one person happy each day, even if it is yourself.
There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty of being happy.
Robert Louis Stevenson
It is the inalienable right of all to be happy.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting
a few drops on yourself.
You have no more right to consume happiness without producing it
than to consume wealth without producing it.
George Bernard Shaw
Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle and the life of the candle will not be shortened.
Happiness never decreases by being shared.
Make Someone Happy
Lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Music by Jule Styne.
Sung by Jimmy Durante.
(From the musical “Do Re Mi.”)
Make someone happy,
make just one someone happy,
make just one heart the heart that you sing to.
Fame, if you win it,
comes and goes in a minute.
Where’s the real stuff in life to cling to?
Make someone happy,
make just one someone happy,
and you will be happy, too.
Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy.
They are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.
To be able to find joy in another's joy: that is the secret of happiness.
Happiness comes of the capacity….
to feel deeply,
to enjoy simply,
to think freely,
to risk life,
to be needed.
Happiness consists in activity...it is a running stream, not a stagnant pool.
John Mason Good
Happy people have two things in common. They know exactly what they want and they feel they are moving toward getting it. That’s what makes life feel good: when it has direction....when you are heading straight for what you love.
If you can walk….you can dance. If you can talk….you can sing!
Life is a hard battle….
and if we laugh and sing a little
as we fight the good fight,
it makes it all go easier.
Enjoyment is not just a goal
….it is a feeling that accompanies important ongoing activity.
Anything you are good at contributes to happiness.
Find things to be happy about.
Amusement may not be the great aim of life,
but it gives zest to life and makes a grand improvement in human character.
We do not experience happiness because of what we get.
We experience happiness because of how we live each moment.
A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances,
but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.
Follow your bliss.
Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but rather, a manner of traveling.
Ever since happiness heard your name, it has been running through the streets trying to find you.
Hafiz of Persia
Happiness is like a butterfly.
The more you chase it,
the more it will elude you.
But if you turn your attention to other things,
it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.
Henry David Thoreau
Happiness is like a cat.
When you call for it….it usually ignores you.
When you don’t seek it, but just go about your life
….it jumps into your lap.
Most people pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it.
Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.
There is no such thing as pure pleasure
….some anxiety always goes with it.
When one door of happiness closes….another opens.
But often we look so long at the closed door
we do not see the one which has been opened to us.
Happiness is not the absence of problems
….but the ability to deal with them.
Baron de Montesquieu
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs: for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere, life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with your God, whatever you conceive it to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be careful. Strive to be happy.
You live more fully once you realize that
any time spent being unhappy is wasted time.
The greatest happiness is to transform one’s feelings into action.
Madame de Stael
The grand essentials of happiness are:
….something to do
…..something to love
….something to hope for.
Happiness is no laughing matter.
I drink a little champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it….unless I’m thirsty.
If I had my life to live over, I'd live over a Chinese restaurant.
When you're happy….be sure to notify your face.
I never lose sight of the fact that just being is fun.
I take it as a prime cause of the present confusion of society that it is too sickly and too doubtful to use pleasure as a test of value.
To have a Happy New Year:
In the Southern U.S…..eat a dish of black-eyed peas and rice for prosperity.
In Texas….eat black-eyed peas being sure to leave three peas on your plate for good luck.
In Spain….eat twelve grapes, one at each toll of the bell, as the clock strikes midnight for more good luck.
In Nigeria….eat oval-shaped foods like hard-boiled eggs for abundance.
In Holland….eat special doughnuts called oliebollen for happiness.
In Australia….drink a beer with your summertime barbecue for the fun of it.
For the Jewish New Year in the Fall….eat apple slices dipped in honey or a piece of honey cake
For the Chinese New Year in February….eat oranges for wealth and eat long, uncut noodles
In Ghana….dig a whole in the earth. Speak into that hole all the bad things that happened to you in the old year. Cover those words with dirt. Then, over the dirt, speak all the good things that you hope for yourself, your family and your friends in the New Year. Next, pour a small amount of palm wine over the dirt to honor your ancestors. Finally, drink a sip of the wine to honor yourself.
How to get happy when you don’t feel happy:
1. Wear bright colors.
2. Go outside….look around….breathe deeply three times slowly.
3. Inside or out, stand still, move your arms back and forth like you are jogging while you count to ten.
4. Take a deep breath and push your shoulders way back and smile.
5. Look into a mirror and laugh loudly for 10-15 seconds while letting your upper body shake.
Caution: Only do all five steps….if you really want to have a great day!
Take time to work….it is the price of success.
Take time to think….it is the source of power.
Take time to play….it is the secret of perpetual youth.
Take time to read….it is the foundation of wisdom.
Take time to be friendly….it is the road to happiness.
Take time to love and be loved….it is the privilege of the gods.
Take time to share….it is selfish to do otherwise.
Take time to laugh….it is the music of the soul.
